Raku Ceramics and Jewelry

Our laboratory is the only one in Italy that produces Raku Ceramics for jewellery.

Raku means Enjoyment and originates from the name of the Japanese Tea
Master of tea ceremonies, who lived in Japan in the 16th century and who
invented the procedure.

The peculiarity of this “production of incandescent pieces from the oven” spread in the West since the beginning of the ‘ 900, involves using the heat shock resistant clays and glazes containing precious metal salts and reducing substances that originated from pearl white colours and metallic lustres.

Primal elements: Earth, water, air, fire, together with the enamel composition, reducing-oxidising environment and duration of the intervention, produce items with reflections of surprising beauty and uniqueness.

The  jewels are presented in a wide range of colors and metallic lustres, the result of extensive studies and numerous and ongoing experiments. With the use of precious metals the artist gets wonderful effects of  gold and silver,  barely imitable with shimmering colors and  superb metallic lustres.

The creatio: with raw clay each element is molded by expert hands with patience and creativity: spheres, cubes, trenchetti, circles, etc., come to life and on each and everyone the Company has put the initials ED as a symbol and guarantee of authenticity.

The drying system: The items created will dry slowly leaning on terracotta/ clay sculpture.

Prior to the cooking: The dried clay elements are now put into a special oven and baked at about 1000 degrees for several hours.

The Glazing of the ceramics: The items are dipped by hand, using special pliers, one by one in a bath of silicates and metallic oxides specifically created by our laboratories and whose formulation is carefully kept secret.

The second cooking stage: glazed elements are introduced in a small oven, designed and created especially by our technicians and cooked at a temperature of about 980 degrees. During the cooking process and without waiting for the cooling of the oven, the moment the object is glowing, it is extracted from the furnace with long pliers and immersed rapidly in reducing material. In this way the reducing takes place (removal of oxygen atoms from an oxide with release of metal content) that allows to obtain beautiful colors and above all untraceable shades off the grid. Soon after, always using long pliers , the object is immersed in cold water that has the task to block reactions and focus on a color that you want.

The assembling: Raku ceramics items are now shining with their own brightness and are ready to be assembled in aluminium and/or with Silver 925 obtained using the technique of precision metal casting (or investment casting), aluminium.

Experienced hands, they run fast and unite together the various elements of Raku Ceramics, following a project that was created earlier on. The more complex jewels are, they come alive with precious hands of the goldsmith, who has patience and rigorously applies the Valencian art craft procedures.

From vast experience, new  solutions arised  to adapt to the precious metallics and ceramic elements, always measured differently because they were  handmade.

All creations are the result of extensive research into sophisticated techniques and rare raw materials.
